Club Record Goes as Wootten and Banerjee help Bay to win over Knebworth Park
Posted by Mark Bridges on 02/07/09
BBCC 285-3 (49 overs)
KPCC 192 all out (42.5 overs)
The stand of 261 for the second wicket between Trevor Wootten (118*) and Souvik Banerjee helped Bay II’s to a 93 run victory over Knebworth Park.
Skipper Mark Bridges, for once, lost the toss and was delighted when informed that Knebworth had decided to bowl first on a flat, dry pitch, with a fast outfield in mid 20 degree heat. Bay’s league position had a big influence on the Knebworth skipper.
Wootten and Alex Harris opened the Bay innings and Harris, looking out of touch, was bowled with the score on 11. Wootten was joined by Banerjee and carefully started to put the platform down for what was to be a record stand.
At the end of the first 20 overs, the score was 70-1 with the Knebworth attack not giving too much away. However, with both batsmen now nicely settled, over 140 runs came from the next 20 through some excellent boundary hitting. Banerjee was first through to his 50, with Wootten temporarily stuck in the 40’s, and motored quickly into the 90’s. Wootten, having been dropped twice, finally made it through to his half-century and set about catching Banerjee up. With both batsmen on 99 at the same time, Wootten was again missed twice with two caught and bowled chances going down in the same over. Banerjee, finally seeing some strike, took his single to get to his maiden Bay ton, with Wootten following suit in the same over.
The stand finally came to an end with the score on 272 when Banerjee was caught on the long-off boundary for 124. Matt Jones (4) and Avi Ghosh (5*), having had their pads on for the best part of 45 overs, had a brief swing before skipper Bridges declared at the end of 49th over, with the score on 285-3.
Knebworth Park, needing 5.5 runs per over, fancied the chase. After going past the outside edge a few times, Dean Johnson finally found the edge with the ball rolling up first slip Jon Hayes’s arm and just missing his nose allowing Wootten to take a simple, but somewhat amusing, catch.
KP’s number three, Price, came in and set about the Bay bowling until he hit one to Matt Jones in the covers and called for a single. In one swoop, Jones’s pick-up and accurate throw beat the non-striker for a very smart run out.
A few overs later, Price then hit one to gully where Wootten tripped over the ball and the batsman called for another single. However, Wootten’s trip propelled the ball to Matt Jones, who then repeated his earlier trick. Another sharp run-out.
Avi Ghosh’s spin was always questioning the KP batsmen but they kept going and were up with the run rate, despite the darkening clouds and the sound of distant thunder. Three wickets then fell, two to Ghosh and one to Vinod Vaghadia. KP were six down and Price was back in the pavilion having scored a rapid 45.
A stand for the seventh wicket involving Axon, their 13 year old Herts wicket keeper who went onto make his maiden senior 50, kept the game alive. Ghosh finally removed the impressive youngster, with probably his worst delivery, and in the following over Vaghadia, now in his second spell, removed his partner, Bayford, thanks to an excellent leg-side stumping from Phil Marchant.
Now 8 down, KP fell behind, needing 100 of the last ten overs to win. Vaghadia struck again to take the ninth wicket, his third by way of LBW, leaving Ghosh to wrap up the 93 run win, taking his fourth wicket by clean bowling his man.
Literally less than five minutes later the heavens opened, vindicating skipper Bridges’s decision to decline a second drinks break (much to the annoyance of his wicket keeper). The job was done just in time.
It was a good team performance, naturally buoyed by the big stand. It was fitting that the previous record-holder, Haysie was present to see his record of 222 (with Dean Romeril vs. Bushey in 2001) smashed and to pay £10 for the priviledge of a fresh-air game. The stand of 261 will a tough record to beat…

Bernie Kelly 1934 - 2008
Posted by S Haynes on 09/12/08
It is with much sadness that we learned that our dear friend and Vice President of the Club, Bernie Kelly, passed away in the early hours of Saturday 6th December.
Bernie supported the Colts and all social activities and set the standard for smart attire and skills on the dance floor. However his endless grumbles have been sadly missed by the working parties and colleagues at the bar.
Our thoughts are with Gay, Adam and their family at this time.
New Club President 2008
Posted by S Haynes on 04/12/08
Stuart Haynes, the retiring President, proposed John Skitt as the new President of the Club. Stuart outlined John's long association with the Bay and his involvement in the running of the Club in one way or another almost since his arrival in 1971. His left arm bowling, "dynamic" batting style and subtle tones of this reserved Yorkshireman have graced the fields of Botany Bay ever since. Club Captain from 1980 - 83. Chairman from 1984 - 90 during which time he led the drive for a more efficient and businesslike approach to club managment. A member of the Port Society which developed the 5 and 10 year plans for the Club. In recent years he led the committee that reviewed the organisation and management of the Club. As a Life Member he has been a member of the Honours Committee since his inception and recently returned to cricket management in the role of Chairman of Selectors.
The recommendation was accepted unanimously by the Club.
New Life Members and Vice Presidents 2008
Posted by S Haynes on 04/12/08
The Honours Committtee recommendation for the appointment of Mike Deasey and Phil Marchant as Life Members and Peter Jarvis and Bill Hall as Vice Presidents was unanimously accepted by the AGM on 3rd December 2008.
Mike Deasey.
Mike's club life started with LOBFC back in 1967 where, until his playing career was curtailed in 1995 through injury, he was a regular player from 1972 and captained teams for many years. LOBFC Chairman, social committee involvement and key driver in bringing about the relationship with BBCC and making it such a successful partnership over the years. In recent years he was instrumental in the recovery of LOBFC and encouraged the dual sport opportunities for club members. He created and developed the Big Boppas Rock n Roll Club into a successful section of the Club and continues to provide the food for both Saturday and Sunday footballers. Mike has yet to sit back and just enjoy a quiet pint.
Phil Marchant
Phil joined the Club in 1981 and has shown his commitment to the Club both on and off the field of play ever since. He has has stints skippering and as vice captain for 2nd and 3rd XI's, Club Secretary for 2 years, Assistant Treasurer for 2 years and then he set to work on the Colts. The achievement here in terms of a truly professional approach to teaching cricket to the youngsters, developing relationships with schools, achievement of the Club Mark status and establishing a Colts and young player environment, is the envy of many.
Peter Jarvis
For the past 20 years Peter has been an ever present member of working parties, be they decorating the pavilion, cleaning drains, pruning trees or collecting stuff in his trailer. Since his retirement his is a weekly presence at the Club for the many jobs required to maintain our graounds and buildings. Although never having enjoyed our sporting facilities nor held an office of the Club Peter is a member who contributes so much behind the scenes to the effective running of the Club.
Bill Hall
Bill "appeared" at the Club assisting the then groundsman and has grown to be our groundsman in recent years. However Bill's contribution goes way beyond his role on the ground. He is a true club member, always available and willing to help out and has supported everything the Club does socially with the fireworks, club tours etc. and has used his own enthusiasm for the Club to bring in the family for teas, socials etc. To have such a clubman looking after our grounds is to all our benefit and to have such a willing help behind the scenes is invaluable.
Congratulations to Mike, Phil, Peter and Bill and our sincere thanks for their hard work and enthusiastic support for the Club for many years.
Roger Barham 1937 - 2008
Posted by Stuart Haynes on 13/11/08
It is with much sadness that we have to report the passing away of Roger Barham, age 71, in the early hours of Tuesday 11th November 2008.
Roger, a Vice President of the Club, joined the Bay in 1969 and was probably the best cricketer ever to play for the Club. In recent years Roger took on the role of welcoming everybody into the clubhouse and his quips and jokes, always saucy, from his corner of the bar will be missed by all.
Ever the lovable rogue, Roger entertained us all throughout his innings.
The funeral took place on Wednesday 26th November at Enfield Crematorium followed by a celebration of his life by his family of friends at the Bay.

Cricket AGM
Posted by Stuart Haynes on 06/12/06
The Cricket AGM held on Sunday 2nd December 2007 re-elected Dave Patrickson as Cricket Chairman and elected Spencer Hunt as Club Captain and Julia Hollaway as Secretary.
Other officers elected for 2008 will be David Lawrance, 1st XI Vice Captain, Mark Bridges and Chris Pearce (2nd XI), Spencer Lindsell and Roger Jennings (3rd XI) and John Monk (4th/Development XI).
The Selection Committee will be completed with John Skitt (Chairman of Selectors), Tom Weldon (Team Sec.) and Simon Clarke (Fixture Sec.).
Chris Pearce takes over as Treasurer, John Dent and Martin Clark will represent cricket on the Ground and House Committees and Lauren Hall will coordinate the social activities.
Chairman’s Report
Dave Patrckson reported 2007 as a very bad season with both 1st and 2nd XIs relegated and the 3rd XI missing promotion by just one place due to the poor availability in the higher sides towards the end of the season.
The decline was put down to the retirement of top players with no effective replacements, too many players having a bad season, injuries to key players, bad weather and bad luck and poor availability and cry-offs as the results got worse.
All is not gloom. Mark McCabe had a good season with both bat and ball and the youngsters Tom Edrich (1st XI) and Jack Patrickson (first 5fer and hat trick for the 2s) plus solid team performances for the 3rd XI achieving its highest ever league finish under the leadership of Spencer Lindsell were recognised. These together with the strength of the Colts, see below, and the number of younger players coming through is encouraging for the future.
The Roger Andrews legacy of £5000 has been spent on new sight screens, a new scoreboard for the second ground and boundary rope.
Outgoing captains and officers were thanked for their hard work including the Hall's and Farmer's for their excellent teas, Bill Hall for the ground, and our umpires and scorers.
Treasurers Report
Timely payment of annual subscriptions is a problem and the new committee was charged with tackling the issue. Annual subs. remains unchanged, £105 for adults, whilst match fees will increase to £5 for adults and £3 for students.
A special vote of thanks was passed for Clive Rolt who has stepped down as Treasurer.
Colts
We now have more than 100 colts, supported by 3 professional coaches who last season included Beth Morgan (England International) club coaches and parents with coaching and development scheme recognised by the Club Mark and Club Focus status, enjoying a cricket development opportunity unmatched in the area.
Hioghlight of the season was the Under 11s winning their league. 2008 will see our first Under 13s Girls team working in conjunction with Enfield County School. Membership is outlooked to continue growing with increasing numbers ready to progress to the senior sides.
The efforts of Phil Marchant, Colts Chairman, Ema Palmer, Secretary, Julia Hollaway, Child Welfare Officer, Stuart Stanley and all their helpers was recognised and commended by the Club.
Other Business
4th XI / Development XI - The Development League has become a big disappointment with only 3 games played, due to bad weather and opposition cry-offs. The meeting agreed with the proposal to seek entering a 4th XI in the Herts Saturday League whilst maintaining the Development XI ethos for the colts entry into club cricket.
