BB Petanque Club Challenge Loosoise, France
8 - 9th May 2010

This year again saw the French Club, Loosoise, visiting the Bay for our biannual challenge. Our 21 visitors, from a suburb of Lille, represent one of the strongest clubs in northern France and we were anticipating some tough competition in the inter Club competition on Saturday 8th and in the open melee on Sunday 9th May.

For the first time in the Club's history we were victors in the inter-club competition with the triple of Dave Dunkin, Margaret Nash and Stuart Haynes unbeaten, winning all 6 games, including taht against the veterans champions of northern France

After wining and dining our vistors and them insisting on a night of dancing we were back on the piste on sunday morning for the melee when Dave Dunkin was again victorious.

A good weekend was had by all and we look forward to the return in Lille in November 2011.
Andy Fairlie Tribute - Saturday 1st May 2010
Saturday 1st May 2010

Sadly Andy's final innings came to a close just before Christmas and due to the terrible weather conditions few of us were able to join the family in Devon for the funeral. The Bay was always in Andy's thoughts and his weekly phone calls and his "colourful" reminiscences of the past 60 years of Bay life are missed by many. It was fitting therefore that Jean and Jemma joined us all to celebrate the "lovable rogue" at the Bay on Saturday 1st May.

Memories of Andy were shared by all. Jean and Jemma prented a suitably inscribed bench to the Club in memory of Andy. John Dent and John Jarvis shared more amusing stories. The initial trials of the bench left those testing convinced that the little fella was not only listening in but also interupting!

In line with Andy's wishes his ashes were scattered across the ground that he loved so much. He is missed and will be remebered for many a year. Those who knew Andy and who would like to attend please let J.J. know via

as soon as possible,to enable suitable catering arrangements to be made.

AGM 2008
Wednesday 3rd December 2008

The Club AGM was held on Wednesday 3rd December 2008.

Club Chairman, John Dent, opened the meeting and shared with members the sad departures of senior members in recent months - Ruth Tong, Harry Taylor and Roger Barham and in recent days Bertie Curtis of Jazz and Darts.

Following the formal business of Receipt and Approval of Club accounts and deliberations on Club subscriptions, no change for 2009, Stuart Haynes, stepping down as President, proposed the following, all of which were unanimously accepted:

Club President for 2 years - John Skitt

Life Members - Mike Deasey and Phil Marchant

Vice Presidents - Peter Jarvis and Bill Hall

Election of Officers

All Officers elected in 2007 continue for a second year. Following the sad loss of Roger Barham the operation of the bar will be underttaken by the partnership of John Dent and Mark Catchpole. Stuart Haynes will take over from John Skitt as the additional member of the Members Committee.

Community Amatuer Sports Club (CASC) Scheme

The background to the CASC scheme was outlined to members who accepted the required Rule changes for the Club to achieve such status and thereby qualify for the 80% mandatory rate relief.

Any Other Business

The facilities plans and difficulties being encountered with the local authority re the provision af girls/ladies showers and changing rooms were explained. Over the next year the Club can anticipate the refurbishment of the kitchen and new furniture and redecoration for the pavilion.

Sun Shines for President' s Day
Sunday 20th July 2008

President's Day was again blessed with sunshine albeit a cold wind towards the end of the day. 94 past and present members and friends joined the President, Stuart Haynes, for lunch and were joined by many more during the afternoon to watch the Club XI beat the President's XI by 8 wickets.

The President's XI included many of the 1994 National Village Cup team which was beaten in the semi final. Ably (maybe disably!) led by JJ we were entertained to some fine batting by the Jonathans Merrell and Hayes, supported by Jim Sherring, Andy Hammett making his first visit to the Bay for 14 years, Mark McCabe, Clive Rolt and Paul Staley and a fine cameo innings at the close by Naresh Williams saw a final score of 197-6 off the 40 overs. Young Tom Edrich, 3-20, was the pick of the bowling. Unfortunately despite brave efforts with the ball by Graham Rolt, Bob Rose and the "all-rounders" the lunch and years conspired to put the team at a disadvantage in the field and a superb opening partnership by Alex Harris, 76, and Mark Cousens, stranded at the end on 99 not out, saw the current Bay side worthy winners.

Absent friends remembered during the day included Ron and Eddie Shelfer and Rose Haynes. At tea time a memorial plaque was unveiled (or was it untowelled) on the new sitescreens in memory of the late Roger Andrews, "Drews", to recognise his bequest to the Club.

The President's Day Charity raffle raised £700 to help young James Carnaby, son of Bruce and recovering from brain surgery, and The Children's Trust who have been so instrumental in his recovery.
