Life Members - Mike Deasey and Phil Marchant

Sun Shines for President' s Day
Sunday 20th July 2008
President's Day was again blessed with sunshine albeit a cold wind towards the end of the day. 94 past and present members and friends joined the President, Stuart Haynes, for lunch and were joined by many more during the afternoon to watch the Club XI beat the President's XI by 8 wickets.
The President's XI included many of the 1994 National Village Cup team which was beaten in the semi final. Ably (maybe disably!) led by JJ we were entertained to some fine batting by the Jonathans Merrell and Hayes, supported by Jim Sherring, Andy Hammett making his first visit to the Bay for 14 years, Mark McCabe, Clive Rolt and Paul Staley and a fine cameo innings at the close by Naresh Williams saw a final score of 197-6 off the 40 overs. Young Tom Edrich, 3-20, was the pick of the bowling. Unfortunately despite brave efforts with the ball by Graham Rolt, Bob Rose and the "all-rounders" the lunch and years conspired to put the team at a disadvantage in the field and a superb opening partnership by Alex Harris, 76, and Mark Cousens, stranded at the end on 99 not out, saw the current Bay side worthy winners.
Absent friends remembered during the day included Ron and Eddie Shelfer and Rose Haynes. At tea time a memorial plaque was unveiled (or was it untowelled) on the new sitescreens in memory of the late Roger Andrews, "Drews", to recognise his bequest to the Club.
The President's Day Charity raffle raised £700 to help young James Carnaby, son of Bruce and recovering from brain surgery, and The Children's Trust who have been so instrumental in his recovery.
